The Ecology and Conservation Laboratory (LEC) was founded in 2009. Since 2010 it has been allocated to the Department of Environmental Engineering (DEA) at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR). Thus, for more than 10 years, LEC-UFPR has been developing studies on ecological interactions, conservation biology, invasive species and biotic homogenization, predominantly with aquatic organisms.
The main objectives of the laboratory are:
-
Produce and disseminate knowledge regarding different aspects of conservation biology and ecological interactions.
-
Develop studies on the fundamental hypotheses about biological invasions and their effects on native biodiversity.
-
Understand how non-native species and anthropic impacts promote changes in the functionality and composition of fish communities in space-time
Our research is conducted mainly in fluvial environments (rivers, streams, estuaries), carrying out theoretical reviews, practical field studies and laboratory experiments.
Among the topics covered are:
-
Biotic homogenization
-
Effects of predation
-
Community structure
-
Species diversity
